Sunday Afternoons......
There are so many wonderful people in and around our community that dedicated their time, hearts and homes to helping animals. We are privileged here at Green Cottage Pets to be aware of some of these groups and do our best to pass information along but we hope we have come up with an even better idea. We are setting Sunday afternoons aside for groups to come in and share information with us all.
Our first Sunday guests, Valerie (one of the Foster Moms) and Cloe, a beautiful 13 year old (estimated age) American Eskimo, were wonderful representatives of the work that takes place at Old Dog Haven.

Cloe was found wondering along side a road, blind, deaf, flea infested, totally matted and hungry. She was taken to the pound, where she was kept for two weeks, waiting for her owners to claim her. No one came and that is where Old Dog Haven stepped in. Old Dog Haven is a very small group of people with a network of others trying to provide a loving safe home for senior dogs abandoned at this stage of their lives. They had to shave Cloe to remove her matted fur. The process took over five hours because they did this at Cloe's pace ,to keep her comfortable and calm. Wow! She is gorgeous, happy and sweet! She gently greeted each person who met her the Sunday they were in here sharing their information. Her old eyes sparkled in anticipation of all the people she was meeting and also enjoyed a few snacks along the way.
There are as many stories as there are dogs. They are above the 100 mark for total dogs in their care. With their current resources, this is probably the maximum number of dogs they can help. They help each animal through a network of foster care. Other ways to be involved would be through transporting, supplies, donations and more.

whose mission is to foster any and all cats until a forever home
can be found for them. The organization was started in the early 1990s, with a small group of animal-loving friends making a commitment to create a better life for homeless animals. With little more than determination, they started MEOW, a non-profit organization with a no-holds-barred no-kill philosophy. MEOW is staffed almost entirely by volunteers. Its still all about the animals.
An interesting part of their work is they have located a group of arborists....Cat stuck in a tree?, is a page on their website.....
" We generally think of cats as natural tree climbers. There may be a common belief that if the cat gets up a tree, it can get down. Unfortunately, this is not necessarily true. When a cat becomes stuck in a tree, it is important to get them down as soon as possible. In as little as a day or two, the cat can become dehydrated and weak. Additionally there is always a threat that the cat will fall prey to a predator. Allowing the animal to remain in the tree for several days is life threatening."

And as always Kindred Souls is near and dear to our hearts. Everyday dogs are euthanized at shelters because there is no room.
Kindred Souls Foundation is a no-kill, 501c3 non-profit animal welfare organization looking for special people who will open their hearts and homes to foster these precious souls. Fostering an animal requires an investment of time as well as emotional and financial commitment. Kindred Souls Foundation covers ALL medical costs for the animal while in foster care. Foster parents are responsible for the following:
- providing the animal with on-going quality nutrition
- providing the animal with social interaction, one-on-one nurturing, play, and exercise
- transporting the animal to appointments
- administering medication to the animal if needed
- keeping the animal in-doors (with written exceptions as per the specific case)
- maintaining a safe environment for the animal

Some basic health and safety tips.... - Prevent
a fatal accident by providing your guests with a secure place for their
bags and purses keeping any over-the-counter drugs or prescription
medicines out of reach.
- Place a "safe treat" bowl or container where family and guests can take treats from to give to your pet.
This eliminates all the temptation for others to feed your pet
inappropriate foods...you're happy, they're happy and your pet stays
happy and healthy throughout the year.
- A good rule of thumb concerning treats is that they should amount to no more than 1/5th of their food intake in a day.
- The
National Animal Poison Control Center located in Urbana, Illinois was
formed to help pet owners with potential poisoning problems. Their
phone number is 1-800-548-2423.
- Some poisonous springtime plants to be aware of are Azalea, Daffodil, Iris, Lily of the Valley and Tulips.

Doc Watcher 1994-2008
I want to take the opportunity to celebrate the life of Doc, our 14 year old dalmatian that past away the last week of April.
What a wonderful friend, a true companion, smart, kind, patient, FUNNY, what a gentlemen! I feel very inadequate even attempting to put him or our time together into words. I will miss his feel and his touch but take great pleasure in feeling his spirit forever present. Thank you Doc for all the wonderful memories. You are in out hearts forever! We love you.
More information to come.
